{"id":1343,"date":"2011-11-16T12:46:56","date_gmt":"2011-11-16T12:46:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.spirit-of-orkney.com\/contents1a\/?p=1343"},"modified":"2011-11-16T12:48:26","modified_gmt":"2011-11-16T12:48:26","slug":"churchill-barriers-under-new-ownership","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spirit-of-orkney.com\/contents1a\/2011\/11\/churchill-barriers-under-new-ownership\/","title":{"rendered":"Churchill Barriers under new ownership"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Churchill Barriers that link the southern islands of Orkney have been purchased by Orkney Islands Council.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_129\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-129\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spirit-of-orkney.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/churchill_barriers_square.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-129\" title=\"churchill_barriers_square\" src=\"https:\/\/www.spirit-of-orkney.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/churchill_barriers_square.jpg\" alt=\"churchill_barriers_square\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-129\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Churchill Barriers looking towards the mainland<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Built during World War two as a defence against submarine attack following the sinking of the Royal Oak in 1939, the barriers now form an important road, linking the southern islands with the mainland.<\/p>\n<p>The council purchased the barriers from the MoD for a nominal fee in order to address an &#8220;anomaly&#8221; in the ownership of the road network but this sale has also given the local authority ownership of the seabed underneath the barriers.<\/p>\n<p>The purchase from the MoD may lead to a marine energy project harnessing tidal flows beneath the installations.<\/p>\n<p>David Hartley of Orkney Islands Council said:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Orkney Islands Council&#8217;s Transport and Infrastructure Committee has discussed possible options for incorporating renewable energy generation within the Churchill Barriers&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Members agreed there should be more detailed discussions of the proposals at a future meeting of the Policy Resources Committee &#8211;
