How do they know it is the representation of a boy. There seems tobe a decided lack of physical features. It could also be a young, physically undeveloped girl. Archaeologists are famous for jumping to unscientific conclusions.

Given the sophistication of the buildings found it seems unlikely that this headless, armless and legless object is meant to be a figure of a boy....though I suppose they did find a brainless faceless prehistoric fish off Orkney. The two holes on top look like natural flaws rather than eyes and the object has more of the appearance of a large broken pin or peg that may have been pushed into the ground and the large stone circles scribed in the earth by placing a string around the grooved pin to mark out the ground plan. There are similar objects that have been found made in whalebone in Orkney and stone at Skara Brae. Just think circle and you wont go far wrong that's my speculation

My mother is the owner of the Ridgeland. In adition to its earlier role as a Town Hall and Prison. It was also later Hay's tea room, a doctors surgery, and a boafding house for students from the Northern Isles attending school in Kirwall.

It maintains nearly all of its original features including its wooden cornicing and paneling. It was featured in Ianthe Ruthven's, The Scottish House.
