Collaboration between Orkney College’s Agronomy Institute and the Orkney Wine Company has come to fruition, with a new wine full of local ingredients on the shelves in time for Christmas.

Emile Van Schayk, of Orkney Wine, said, “Orkney White is made exclusively with ingredients grown in Orkney, and thanks to the Agronomy Institute developing the ingredients and making them available on a long term basis, we will now be able to produce Orkney White year on year.

“This is a truly Orkney made product, for tourists and local folk alike to enjoy.  Everything in it, right down to the labels on the

bottles, is grown or made in the islands.”

The College and the Lambsholm based Orkney Wine company have been working together since January 2012, with funding by the Scottish Council, to look at increasing the amount of Orkney grown ingredients in the locally produced wine.

“The Institute supplied us with a range of Orkney-grown fruits, flowers and cereals including elderflowers, oats and black oats,” added Emile. “The result is a clean, soft and full flavoured white wine, with a floral nose.”

The institute’s director, Dr Peter Martin, said: “When the Agronomy Institute opened back in 2002, growing northern berries was one area of interest we wanted to develop, hence the links we have forged with Emile at Orkney Wine.

“This has been a really successful collaboration and it’s very satisfying that we have been able to produce the crops in Orkney and now have a real product to show.

“This has been a first for us, and for Orkney Wine, and now that these crops are in production we will be able to start testing their use on a wider scale, and explore the possibilities for more Orkney grown products.”

Orkney Wine produce a wide selection of locally produced wines which are available for mail order.
